imageIt wasn’t until I got involved in helping a now dear friend and an ex-muslim, that I even learn’t of the horrors affecting people who chose to walk away from a  religion, that was at best an accident of geographical birth. A lottery you may say of how you would be eventually treated when you “opted out”.  It shook me to the core that in our so called progressive and modern society we would allow such atrocities.  If you have read my “Atheophobia” blog you will be aware of some of the punishments being meted out as we speak!  Mr Badawi who in less than a month will be given lashes monthly until his 1000 lashes have been given….

It also made me want to investigate the ” so called” punishments given to apostates from all faiths.

CHRISTIANITY

What does the bible say of apostasy:-

2 CHRONICLES15:13

But that whoever would not seek the lord, the god of Israel, should be put to death, whether young or old, man or woman

EZEKIEL 33:18

When the righteous turns from his righteousness and does injustice, he shall die for it

JOHN 15:6

If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers, and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire and burned

There are in fact four distinct images of the concept of apostasy in Christianity

  • Rebellion
  • Turning away
  • Falling away
  • Adultery

Interesting that committing adultery means you have lost belief in your religion.  What do they class as adultery ,as in the Old Testament there were multiple marriages and concubines. I guess they can cherry pick on their definitions too!  Of course in modern times, there are no strong punishments for leaving Christianity. Our western laws wouldn’t  allow it and society would condemn it. The only punishment is excommunication – hardly a deterrent.  Of course lest we forget in the Middle Ages christianity was prolific in its hideous tortures and killings of apostates. We were burned, beheaded, racked, men had their penises cut off and women their breasts. Aren’t we all glad that is over!

HINDUISM

There is no concept of heresy or apostasy in Hinduism.  It grants complete freedom for a person to leave or choose another religion. Hindus believe all sincere faiths lead to the same god anyway.

SIKHISM

It is up to the individual to leave or choose his faith.  They believe there is only one god no matter what religion you choose.

JUDAISM

Although as with Christianity , they have the texts of the Old Testament, in practice, there is no punishment today for leaving Judaism, other than being excluded from religious worship. Not a hardship!

BUDDHISM

Whilst there are occasional attacks on individuals who apostatise from Buddhism, the occurrence is extremely rare.  The worst penalty suffered is family disapproval up to and including being ostracised by family and community.

imageWELL NOW HERE COMES THE BIG ONE!!!

ISLAM

Apostasy in Islam is commonly described as a conscious decision to abandon Islam by a Muslim in word or deed.  It also includes converting to another religion, mocking god or questioning or denying any tenets of Islam.  Oh and of course becoming an atheist.

Under current laws in Islamic countries, the actual punishment ranges from a prison term  to execution.  They can also void the muslim apostates marriage, deny child custody and also inheritance rights.  23 muslim majority countries, as of 2013, cover apostasy in Islam through their criminal court system.

Examples of Qur’an passages regarding apostasy are :-

QURAN 9;66

Make ye no excuses: ye have rejected faith after ye had accepted it.  If we pardon some of you, we will punish others amongst you, for that they are in sin

QURAN 16:106

He who disbelieves  in Allah after his having believed not he who is compelled while his hears=t is at rest on account of faith, but he who opens his breast to disbelief – on theses is the wrath of Allah, and they shall have grievous chastisement

QURAN 3:90

But those who reject faith after they have accepted it, and then go on adding to their defiance of faith – never will their repentance be accepted: for they are those who have gone astray

In these and many more verses the Quran reprimands apostasy in Islam and suggest it deserves chastisement. But it doesn’t mention capital punishment.

The sunnah in haddiths, which form part of the sharia law do specify the death penalty however :-

SAHIH AL-BOKHARI 9:83:17

Allah’s apostle said ” the blood of a muslim who confesses that none have the right to be worshipped but Allah and that I am his apostle, cannot be shed except in three cases. In Qisas for murder, a married person who commits illegal sexual intercourse and the one who reverts from Islam (apostate)”

SAHIH AL-BOKHARI9:89:271

A man embraced Islam and then reverted back to Judaism, Mu’adh bin Jabal came fans saw the man with Abu Musa. Mu’adh asked ‘ What is worn with this man?’ Abu Musa replied ‘ He embraced Islam and then reverted back to Judaism’ Mu’adh said ‘ I will not sit down unless you kill him as it is the verdict of Allah and his apostles.

So it seems even without all the negative news in the media re ISIS etc. The religion is in fact a cancer to its own followers.  If there ever was a reason to describe a religion as evil it is Islam.  As you see some religions are more forgiving of people wishing to leave their clutches.  I hope one day to see religion eradicated and its evil history forgotten.

FOR IF RELIGION IS STILL HERE IN 1000 YEARS MAN WILL NOT!!!!

When researching for this piece I found three fascinating passages in the bible, one may even say passages encouraging atheism. Who would have thought it. Maybe the bible is one large hoax and we are supposed to find these three passages and get a grip hahahha. See what  do you think?

2 THESSALONIANS 2:11

Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so they may believe what is false

JOHN 8:32

And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free

2 TIMOTHY 4:4

And will turn away from listening to truth and wander off into myths.
