I don’t know if Helen of Troy launched a thousand ships, but a tweet can definitely launch a thousand words. Conversations on twitter more frequently than not, however, never come at the right time for long discourse. This morning, for instance, 6am and I am merely sneaking a peak at my iPad to see a dozen or so notifications flashing up.
One in particular caught my eye as it bore absolutely no reference to my original post, which made me curious. The original article being “Amish Selling Daughter” which you can find here Amish Gift Daughter
Interestingly I received the following comments in return:-
- Not real Christians
- Not following the Bible
- Dawkin’s free speech not allowed in Saudi
I beg to differ here, Amish are most certainly Christians and one wonders why they continually shout ‘not real christians’ when one of their number commit crimes?
Again… What the? I admit 6 am is not the time to use erroneous arguments, I have a short fuse. He got short shrift.
PIGEON CHESS
Which brings me onto the matter of details. I actually don’t care what denomination of bullshit you follow a ‘theist’ is a ‘theist’, you are all the same to me, your choice of recipe for destruction is up to you. You are all worshippers in one or more deities, none more believable or probable than the other.
No matter how often you wish to push science out of the equation it is an inevitable truth that you cannot live without. Enabling only the parts of science that co-habit with your theistic mindset is ridiculous.
As the great humanist and humanitarian statesmen Jawaharlal Nehru stated:
It is science alone that can solve the problems of hunger and poverty, of insanitation and illiteracy, of superstition and deadening custom and tradition, of vast resources running to waste, or a rich country inhabited by starving people… Who indeed could afford to ignore science today? At every turn we have to seek its aid.. The future belongs to science and those who make friends with science (1962)
THE IRRELEVENT DETAILS THEY LIKE TO DISCUSS
- Micro/Macro Evolution – arguing one against the other just highlights your ignorance
- Evolution/Big Bang Theory – neither has any releveance to whether or not one has a belief in a sky fairy
- Biblical Details – arguing details in a fairy tale does not make for a stronger argument, you want to discuss novels join a book club
- Religious Morality – Tut tut, no such thing
- Atheism as a Mental Illness – again proves your ignorance, I don’t care how many followers you have in your echo chamber ( @Danmessay)
- Atheists believe in Satan – equating anyone who doesn’t believe in your bullshit just continues to confirm your indoctriantion. If I asked you if you are afraid of going to Tartalus? Hmm? Yep now you get it.
As Dawkins wrote in “Unweaving the Rainbow”
“We have an appetite for wonder, a poetic appetite, which real science ought to be feeding but which is being hijacked, often for monetary gain, by purveyors of superstition”
Another of my favourite quotes by Dawkins sums up the stupid of religious creation myths.
” I believe that an orderly universe, one indifferent to human pre-occupation, in which everything has an explanation even if we still have a long way to go before we find it, is a more beautiful, more wonderful place than a universe tricked out with capricious, ad hoc magic”
IN CONCLUSION
The devil may be in the details for you but its your devil not ours. (He is the Ogre under your bed)
You can leave out all talk of sciences, evolution, big bang theory and unicorn envy, the argument is ‘no proof of any deities exist’ outside of mans imagination and command.
Your arguments for believing in a deity are simple:
- I don’t understand so God caused it
- I have no proof, so god did it
- I’m afraid of dying so there has to be a god
- If there is no god then I cannot be forgiven and am responsible for my own actions (scary huh?)
We are frequently accused of nihilism – I will throw this right back at you. Your man made belief systems are simply non existent and consequently the study of nothing. Your petty belief systems are just to make you feel important.
As far as I am concerned, you are arguing for the existence of a fly on an elephants ass, your myth is a mere particle of dust in the history of this universe. A Universe that will dwell on long after the religions of today become the mythologies of tomorrow.
In trying to explain the history of the universe the best analogy I have ever read was by Dawkins:
“Fling your arms wide in an expansive gesture to span all of evolution from its origins at your left fingertip to today at your right fingertip. All the way across your midline to well past your right shoulder, life consists of nothing but bacteria. Many-celled, invertebrate life flowers somewhere around your right elbow. The dinosaurs originate in the middle of your right palm, and go extinct around your last finger joint. the whole story of Homo Sapiens and our predecessor Homo erectus is contained in the thickness of one nail clipping. As for the recorded history; as for the Sumerians, the Babylonians, the Jewish patriarchs, the dynasties of pharaohs, the legions of Rome, the Christian Fathers, the Laws of Medes and Persians which never change; as for Troy and the Greeks, Helen and Achilles and Agamemnon dead; as for Napoleon and Hitler, the Beatles and Bill Clinton, they and everyone the knew them are blown away in the dust from one light stroke of a nail file.”
As Isaac Asimov wrote:
“Inspect every piece of pseudoscience and you will find a security blanket, a thumb to suck, a skirt to hold”
Good day to you…
Good morning Deana, you are very profound at such an ungodly (oops) hour !
I think people see what they want to see. They are blinkered because they are terrified of confronting the fact that they are just a very temporary irrelevance in the great scheme of things. They deny mortality.
Sagans quote that people long for there to be a purpose though none is apparent sums it up perfectly.
Great blog once again 👍👍
Luv & hugs 👍🍷💐

It is telling I think, that theists see atheism and critical thinking as a mental illness. Surely the fact that we are the only ones who are using our brains for their intended purpose, rather than just failing to use our intellectual powers to take outdated ideologies on board and follow the herd without cogent or independent thought.
We’re humans, not sheep!

I find their whole argument for mental illness the greatest of ironies. 😏
They are conciously lobotomised at an early age to the point they lose reality on most levels…
